The Japanese Way of the Sword in the ancient City of York
Thursday 19:00 - 21:00
Knavesmire Primary School, York
Kendo, written as 剣道 in Japanese, literally means "the Way of the Sword". It is a modern martial art that is directly descended from traditional Japanese swordsmanship (kenjutsu). The art is practiced via the use of bamboo swords called shinai (竹刀) and armour called bogu (防具), which we use to strike designated target areas (打突部位 - datotsu-bui). These are:
The head (面 men)
The wrist (小手 kote)
The chest (胴 dou)
The throat (突き tsuki)
Kendo is practiced bare-foot and can be very loud compared to many other sports and activities. This is because we use shouting called hassei (発声; also often called kiai 気合) to express our spirit and leaping called fumikomi (踏み込み) to propel our strikes forward.
In this way, we aim to achieve ki-ken-tai-no-icchi (気剣体の一致), or unity of spirit, sword and body, with every single strike. In short - we leap, strike and shout at the same time!
Kendo combines physical and mental discipline, emphasizing etiquette, respect, and the spirit of the samurai. It is both a competitive sport and a way to develop character and perseverance.
We are Do Shin Ken Yu Kai York, a passionate community of kendo practitioners! Founded in 2008, our club is dedicated to the traditional Japanese martial art of kendo. Located in the historic city of York, we strive to cultivate the spirit of kendo through rigorous training, discipline, and mutual respect.
Our members range from complete beginners, to experienced kendoka, and even all the way to National Team representatives who champion Great Britain abroad - all united by a common love for the art of the sword. We offer a supportive environment where everyone can develop their skills, regardless of age or experience level. Join us to embark on a journey of physical and mental growth, and become part of our vibrant kendo community
Our club is registered with the British Kendo Association, who oversee the practice of Kendo in the UK and all coaches are insured and registered as well.
Our name comes from Japanese characters which mean:
道 Do - Way
心 Shin - Heart
剣 Ken - Sword
友 Yu - Friendship
会 Kai - Meeting
Together, these come to mean "the friendly association for the development of the heart and mind through the application of the principles of the sword".
Our address is:
Knavesmire Primary School, Campleshon Road, South Bank, York, YO23 1HY
There is free parking available at the school, but the gates are not usually open until 18:45.
Be aware that SatNav will take you down Trafalgar Street which is incorrect. The gate is on Campleshon Road, right between the bus stop and the zebra crossing.
The main hall can be found by going through the front gates, immediately turning right, and then left. You should be in front of some transparent doors, and the hall is on your right. Give us a wave and let us know you're new!
